KNIT-TOBER FEST!

September 28th, 2011

Knitting is one of the great joys of my life and I want to share it with as many people as possible.  It is a wonderful way to relax, meet new people and produce priceless gifts.

All month long, SF Knitting Supply is offering nothing but Learn to Knit classes.  I have scheduled 15- count ‘em, 15 two hour sessions for one and all to learn to knit!

It’s $20 per two hour session or you can purchase a card for $60 and come as many times as you like in October.  Whether you buy the card or just take one class, you must register at least 24 hours ahead to save your spot in the session that you want.  The max number of students per class is 8 and if no one registers by 24 hours before a session it may be cancelled.

Here is the schedule:

Tuesdays @ 10AM, Thursdays @ 7PM, Sundays @ 12PM (except 10/2 and 10/9)

October Knit Along

September 9th, 2011

We’re kicking off our next knit along on October 1st at the Noriega Street Block Party!  We’ll be knitting Elizabeth Zimmerman’s Garter Stitch Blanket (a la Jared Flood) in Cascade Ecological Wool.  If you would like to knit a big project that will be family heirloom, but are a bit worried about crossing the finish line- this knit along is for you!  Participants will enjoy 3 in store events, an online support group and access to me via email for help all through the month of October.

To join in, all you have to do is contact me to order your yarn (10 skeins of Eco Wool @$19.95 each)& copy of The Opinionated Knitter (I’m offering this at my cost $18.00) and you’re in!

September Knitting Classes. It’s on.

September 5th, 2010

Check out the calendar to see what we have to offer.  From beginners to baby sweaters- we’ve got something for everyone this month.

Sad about the lack of socks?  Just let me know and I will add you to the list.  Once we have at least 5 sock students, we will consult you on the best time and day to schedule a class.

The crochet class on Thursday, September 9th will include a free hand treatment from the beauty side of the shop.  The needle arts can be rough on our poor hands!

New Classes!

July 3rd, 2010

I put some new classes up on the calendar.  It is very exciting.  Feel free to comment if you want to rally for a certain kind of class or a certain time slot.  I’m pretty flexible.  Although this morning my wii fit told me that my true body age is 51.

Long Tail Cast On

July 1st, 2010

First of all, I have to credit Jenny and Nicole (from the Stash & Burn) for this amazing tip. The tip in this article will mean nothing to future knitters.  But if you have been knitting for a while and have attempted a project that required more than 50 cast on stitches in the long tail style, you will appreciate this:

For the long tail cast on, one must predetermine how much yarn it will take to complete the number of cast on stitches called for in the pattern.  There are a couple of tricks for estimating this amount, but even seasoned knitters sometimes miss the mark.  Over estimation results in wasted yarn and under estimation results in ripping out all of your stitches and starting over.

To take the guess work out of the long tail cast on method, you use both ends of your skein.  Simply grasp the two strands together and tie a slip knot near the top (end).  Place the slip knot on your needle as usual and cast on!  When you have the required number of stitches, cut the strand that leads to the end of the skein that you do not want to work with and start knitting with the other.

I highly recommend listening to knitting podcasts.  They are fun and informative.  Stash and Burn is one of the best.  Find it on itunes or at their website stashandburn.com
